Dogecoin's ledger has a floor: one DOGE divides into exactly 100,000,000 koinu, and the koinu — that smallest unit — is the finest increment the network can record. A single koinu, then, equals 0.00000001 DOGE, and no transaction can move an amount smaller than one koinu.
A wallet or an exchange shows you DOGE; the network itself keeps each amount as an integer count of koinu. Counting in an indivisible base unit lets software add and subtract exactly, with none of the drift that decimal fractions invite. Developers, block explorers, and anything that must be accurate to the last fraction of a coin therefore work in koinu.
"Koinu" is Japanese for puppy, a name the Dogecoin community chose to fit the coin's Shiba Inu mascot. Dogecoin itself launched in December 2013, created by Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer as a joke — one that outlived the joke and kept a base unit with a fittingly playful name.
