What is gwei?

1 ETH = 1,000,000,000 gwei, and 1 gwei = 0.000000001 ETH. Convert any amount with the live converter above, or see the gwei to eth or eth to gwei tables.

Gwei is a small denomination of ether, best known as the unit Ethereum gas prices are expressed in. There are 1,000,000,000 gwei in one ETH, which makes one gwei equal to 0.000000001 ETH. The name is short for gigawei — a billion wei, wei being the smallest unit of ether.

Every time you pay for an Ethereum transaction, gwei is the number staring back at you. Wallets and block explorers quote gas prices in gwei because the amounts stay readable — the same price written in ETH would be mostly leading zeros. Your total fee is the gas a transaction uses multiplied by the gas price in gwei.

The name applies the metric prefix giga to wei, Ethereum's base unit. The same denomination was historically also called the shannon, after Claude Shannon, the mathematician who founded information theory. That nickname appears less often now; gwei is the term wallets and documentation use.

To move between the units, multiply an amount in ETH by 1,000,000,000 to get gwei, or multiply gwei by 0.000000001 to go back — a decimal shift that is trivial for a computer and error-prone for a person. Skip the zero-counting and let the converter above check a quoted gas price against what it really costs in ETH, precisely and in both directions.
