What are lamports?

1 SOL = 1,000,000,000 lamports, and 1 lamports = 0.000000001 SOL. Convert any amount with the live converter above, or see the lamports to sol or sol to lamports tables.

Solana keeps its books in lamports — the smallest unit of SOL, the network's native token. A SOL holds 1,000,000,000 lamports, which prices a single lamport at 0.000000001 SOL. Wallets and exchanges usually display balances in SOL, but under the hood every figure is a lamport count.

Lamports show up wherever precision matters: transaction fees and rent on Solana are both denominated in lamports. Quoting a fee as a count of lamports is clearer than writing it as a many-placed decimal fraction of a SOL. Balances on the network are stored as whole numbers of lamports, so there is never anything smaller to account for.

Leslie Lamport, the computer scientist the unit is named after, worked on distributed systems long before cryptocurrencies existed. His research on logical clocks, the Paxos consensus protocol, and Byzantine fault tolerance describes how independent machines can agree on a shared state — the core problem every blockchain has to solve. Naming Solana's smallest unit after him acknowledges that debt.

With 1,000,000,000 lamports to a SOL, moving between the units means walking a decimal point across a long row of zeros, and dropping or adding one is the classic mistake. The converter above sidesteps it: feed it a fee estimate or an explorer balance and it returns the exact figure in SOL — or in lamports, going the other way.
