No matter what a wallet shows you, the XRP Ledger books every amount in whole drops. A drop is the finest subdivision of XRP, the ledger's native asset: one XRP breaks down into 1,000,000 drops, and a single drop works out to 0.000001 XRP.
Transaction costs are the natural habitat of the drop: fees on the XRP Ledger are quoted in drops, not in decimals of one XRP. Because those costs are tiny compared with a whole XRP, expressing them in drops keeps the numbers whole and readable. Ledger tooling follows the same convention, so a fee you copy from an explorer or an API response is usually already a drop count.
Drops have been in use since the XRP Ledger launched in 2012, which makes them among the oldest sub-units in crypto. The name is easy to remember without a formula: a drop is the smallest bit of a liquid you can separate, and a drop is the smallest bit of XRP the ledger can record. Unlike sub-units named after people or built from metric prefixes, the drop is an ordinary English word.
